The Servians have no written history – They consist
of nearly five millions of men & the deeds of their ancestors
have no records familiar to the people. But they have
rich – almost inexhaustible stores of popular poetry.
Far removed from the foreign influences that poetry
is at the same time natural & nervous – characterising
their habitual pursuits, their daily impressions – their
constant prominent associations. We said, too hastily –
that the Servians had no history. Their poetry is their
history – it is more – it is the faithful picture of
themselves. If it were unfaithful it could not be
popular. It would not approve itself to their
affection, nor to their needs understanding. As far as we have seen
that poetry is the versification of strong & simple
feelings, – it has the is encumbered by few epithets – it
