The great objection to "fables" is their want of verisimilitude.
They represent nothing in nature. They convey false
impressions – they are clever descriptions but they are
descriptions still. May not the good purpose end be
answered without the pernicious means? Is there
a motive for fiction if truth will stand in its stead? when truth will serve as well?
Cannot the moral be conveyed without the
mendacity? Do I have thought – & so thinking
have endeavored to extract wisdom from the machinery
of able – without giving language to the distinct
reason thought to the irrational insensible – motion to the inanimate
and reason sagacity to the irrational
