(as now) to receive the dogmas of men for its rule of

prostrated at the mandate of ecclesiastical usurpation
– the day will inevitably arrive in which Christianity
will have to stand the test of universal inquiry, & in which

divine origin. Convinced of the heavenly source, – the heavenly
tendency of our religion, let us do what we can to purify
it from the drop with which error & interest & despotism
& proud & folly have declared it. Let us show to the world in
all its p original simplicity & beauty – It is indeed
"worthy of all acceptation" It is built an undying tree planted in the soil
of truth – watered by the blessings of heaven – whose branches
will one day, extend their luxuriance over the world.

It was my object to show the literary spirit of
christianity. That our Lord & master had devoted a great
deal of his youth to biblical research it would be easy to
show from the whole tenor of his discourses. St. Paul does
not scruple to appear to the poets of Greece, & the whole
of his writings have are the productions of a master. The
Italians have a tradition that the great apostle was
an also great enthusiastic admirer of Virgil, & down to the 15th century
there is the custom was preserved at Mantera of singing
a hymn in honor of their poet on St. Pauls day. They
