Recollections from 1789 to 1822
Can I forget that glorious day
When France her freedom flag unfurl'd
And his proud Spirit like a ray
Of noon-tide smiled upon the world –
Those songs which rent the echoing air
That flag which waved unconquered yet –
Rulers & people blended there –
Can I forget – can I forget?
Can I forget – that our Cesar when rule
Who bound our country to his car
He once our fellow citizen
And next Our Lord tyrant next in glorious war!
Our blood, our gold, in careless waste
He chose to lavished
– chains & debt
His only legacy he left at last –
Can I forget – can I forget?
Can I forget that treacherous one
Who sold our glasses land – her banners tore –
O still I hear the strangers invaders despot-tone
I see him treat our ramparts o'er –
Our brow light pride is gone – our glory fled
All shame – and rage – and vain regret
Our day is done – our brave are dead –
Can I forget – can I forget?
