Babe! I send o'er the silent sea
Many an eloquent thought to thee
And sometimes I sit in a artless mood
Wrapp'd in forgetful solitude –
And scarcely know where my spirit roams
Or whence its burthen of sorry comes –
But the tear has fallen – & babe I see
That tear sprung forth from its source for thee.

Tho' sometimes will sweet to feel a pain
That friendship breast reflects again
And sweeter still those joys to know
That warm on other bosoms glow
Could Yet could I babe – they heart distress impress awake on thee
What a reflected bond Thy future sensibility
I would not doom thee to the sorrow
That rankles in my bosom now Thou from thy father's soul might borrow.

Babe! his world is a wintry day
Of which thou has seen but the morning ray
With more of sunshine & less of gloom
Than will hang o'er thy path in days to come
For oft alas! is the day-break light
Veil'd by the clouds of a moontide night
And oft doth the Sun when he shines most splendid
Hide his head with storm attended.
