Another objection I have heard of has been is
that of excessive severity. "Not to have a moment
"exempt from the eye of scrutiny severity of an
"inquisitorial eye! not to have a moment of liberty
"even of that scanty and melancholy sort moment of liberty which
"till now has been respected even in a prison! This
"isa punishment worse than death: a punishment
"too horrible, too intolerable even for the worst of
"criminals." To somewhat like this effect was the
impression made by it at the first glance upon
an intelligent but a perhaps rather too hasty
and too sensible mind.

forth this censure it should not pass unnoticed
that to with the essential circumstance of undiscontinued respectability
if the term may be allowed, was
