That they the three hardships thus named have a
peculiar tendency to dispose an offender to penitence,
seems to be the general persuasion of mankind. The
fact seems to be pretty generally believed acknowledged received: but the
reasons are not altogether obvious, nor do they seem
to be very explicitly developed in the sentiments minds of
those who shew themselves strenuously convinced of
the fact. An imperfect theory might naturally enough induce one
to deny it. "What is it", it may be said, "that is
"to produce in the offender that aversion to his offence
"which is stiled repentance penitence? It is the pain which he
