C
Of Justifications Reasons
By the supposition the attack against which the
defence is made by you is unlawful: is this it was (it is to be supposed)it would not be
unless it were productive of a mischief:and this mischief
will always be greater than the evil of
so much pain or other enconvenience as is
necessary and not more than necessary for
repelling the attack. Mischief primary and secondary The mischief of the attack
is consists of two branches; the primary and
the secondary: the primary including the pain which
you suffer against upon whom the attack is made: the
secondary including the pain apprehension of mind and the danger
of similar attacks which accrue from it to the community at large.
Now this with regard to the mischief it is probable at least that the pain produced by
the defence will be less than that which would
have been produced by the attack if unrepelled: for
perhaps the attack may be made to cease without
any pain as in the 1st case where the hands of the parlant
are held or tied behind him: or at any rate with
less pain than it would have produced been attended
with, itself: if a man meant to occasion you
a certain quantity of pain, a less quantity of pain
inflicted by you on him will commonly be sufficient
to make him desist from his purpose: for it is
seldom that a man's anger against another is stronger
tha his affection for himself. But be this as it may
