Narrative

am a known friend to government. The relief thus offered
was of course mentioned to the Honourable Secretary:–
who of course would not hear of it. – Thus much concerning
Tothill Fields to keep u the threat of the narrative.
with any other previous histories, though some may not
be unworthy of attention at a proper season, I will not
now attempt to trespass on your Lordship's time.

Things were in this stage, when one day, not many
days after the 11th December that same year (1798) I was
suffered to make my way into the Chamber of the Honourable
Secretary, with a facility the more flattering in
proportion as it had been rare. He should be able (he
thought) to put me in possession of an Estate contiguous
to the spot which had so lately been found inaccessible
.
– It was the Estate of the Marquis of Salisbury at Milbank:–
the estate a portion of which I had already spoken
of to him as a necessary appendage to Tothill Fields.
I should havenot only that spot (53 Acres more or less)
but as much more contiguous land as could be purchased
under the existing Act
(34 G. 3. c. 84) not exceeding the
quantity originally stipulated for and agreed to or what
should be equivalent thereto; or (what would be still
better) a competent allotment out of Tothill Fields if obtainable
without too much trouble: if not a sufficient
quantity of land contiguous to Lord Salisbury's the deficiency
to be made up somewhere else: or at the worth –
& to fill up all deficiencies – an equivalent in money.
One thing however I was to hear – mark – learn – and
inwardly digest – and the notification was repeated and
inculcated into me, over and over again, every time
with encreasing energy, spite of my protestations of
submission & contentment going on all the while in
unison
