But All this while, upon the face of the questions that are lie before me
the alternative which I see is not between the 130
number of £1,300 prisoners that could be composed of the 1000
the agreed-on number of males, viz. 1,000, and the now
proposed or supposed additional numbers of females, viz. 300,
but between a total of no more than 1000, (3-wh whereof 300 of them
females, having 700 males,) and a total of 700,
having whereof 300 females, having but 400 males.
Looking out for the reason The proposed reduction
being so considerable, looking out for the reason – which
I have been able to collect is – an apprehension about
safe custody, in respect of the numbers and the vicinity
of the metropolis.
On this subject, What I have said elsewhere and in print† †, there can
be no need of repeating it here. If it has had the honour
of being read, the result must be that it has not had the
good fortune to prove, at least for the present, satisfactory to the Gentlemen I have here
in view in question. Nothing that is in my power towards rendering
it so shall be wanting.
Let but room be provided sufficient for the numbers agreed on
viz. the 1000 males (plus the now proposed 300 females
be provided: let last a possibility of coming back to the agreement
be preserved, the present immediate fulfilment shall be waived.
