The importance and number of the laws of Parliament
thus violated being given – the more frivolous inconsiderable
the object for which they are violated, the more profound
the contempt of Parliament for the authority of Parliament
as manifested by the violation.
So far as from being an excuses, extenuation The insignificance inconsiderableness of the object for the attainment
of which the authority of Parliament is thus has thus
been violated, is matter of aggravation. The weaker
the temptation, the weaker that sense of obligation
that respect for Parliament the authority which could not preserve save
a man from sinking under giving way to it yielding to it. The weaker slighter that
sinister impulse, which could determine a man to treat
with contempt – and such preserving contempt – the authority of Parliament, the
more flagrant and obstinate profound and prominent explicit is must have been the contempt thus
manifested.
The sentiments entertained for manifested towards the authority of
Parliament by the race of Kings whose reigns filled the
greater nearly the whole part of the 17th Century before the last were full
of respect in comparison of the conduct and language
of this servant of the crown in these our
times. When the three first of the Stuarts trod upon broke in the
