Prize Acts 1805. 1809
In every Attached to each Vice Admiralty Court, the
Greenwich Treasurer, as appears from so many other passages
in both Acts one or other Act entertains a Deputy. These deputies are then
the person meant by the words in question"the several
persons appointed by the .... said Treasurer .... to receive claims
and applications for Prize and Bounty money? No: for
it is from those Vice Admiralty Courts that be this only central
situation the documents in question are to come.
For captors who have not received their shares
at within the time within which distribution is made by the
Agent in each case instance a time is reserved within which
they may receive them in this Hospital. The persons
to whom for any such purpose application is to be made
those if my interpretation conjecture be right are the persons
here intended. But if so, why what not give to each
such person as well as to a name by which he may
be enquired after? why not give to his office a name
by which such his office may be enquired after? and one
more, why not tell us whom it is.
Oh all this is well known to Seamen. –
To some of them perhaps yes: but to each of them, and
upon every occasion – in which such information would be
necessary or of use to him? This surely is more than
will readily lightly be said by anybody. And thence their some
one there may be, even more than one, who more even than
two who into whose heads the whom may enter, and even without their being paid for it may be
desirous the whim the fancy of acting as guardians of
the rights and interests of seamen – of the defenders of their
country in all their ranks and classes. The Right Honourable
Gentlemen whose services
in that character
are thus conspicuous
does he think to manufacture
to himself
and for ever, this honourable
title?
