Logic

Applied to Audible signs are the signs in the instance of
which the amount of the advantage is perceptible with greatest
facility, and measurable with greatest exactness.

Among Generally speaking in the European language all nations but the Chinese and some of those
that border upon that country visible written words discourse is no
otherwise the sign of thought, thence in by being so far as it is the
sign of audible discourse. Whats In so far as this connection state of things
has place, whatsoever of unnecessary diffuseness has place
in discourse in the mass of discourse in question, may have for its seat either the collection assemblage
of audible signs, or the collection assemblage of visible signs, or both.

In so far as the concerns the audible signs, an exemplification
of the quality opposite to the desirable quality here
in question has been just brought to view already given.

In so far As between language and language, of
of the differences of which in this respect different languages are
susceptible, some sort of physical measure may be seen
in the several books in which the discourse intended which
to be in every language is intended to be of the same import is in different
languages, two or more, exhibited on the same page; for
instance column wise. Latin, French, English, German,
In respect the scale of comprehensiveness, the such, it is believed, will
be found the order of precedence.

Considering the quality of compressedness as applying in its application
to the visible signs, taken by themselves, the audible ones
being the same, the practice of the early printers scribes before
the use of commencement of the printing press and that of printers for some time
afterwards will afford an example exemplification of the importance attached
to this quality. For no inconsiderable portion in the extent of the
contents of every written work, to save for saving the labour of the penman, and
the expense of paying him, a sort of shorthand was in use: for this or that single
letter, in particular for it and a more simple character: and so for several of the most frequently occurring combinations of letters: for exampe
for us, for when at the end of a
word: for per, pen and pro in every part.
