<p>Against <add>For</add> this <add>latter</add> defect the English  law provides a <del><gap/></del><lb/>
remedy such as it is, by adding (to use the phraseology of the<lb/>
present Code) the imperative decree of the Judge to the opinative<lb/>
degree pronounced by the arbitrator.</p>
<p>But this mode of escaping from the clutches of<lb/>
the law <add>learned</add> brotherhood <del>was of course</del> could not but be in no<lb/>
small degree unacceptable to them.  It was in part of that<lb/>
species of <add>sham</add> law which supposing it to <add>be real law</add> have existence would be<lb/>
their manufacture:  it <del>is no of</del> is the work of Statute law and<lb/>
not <add>so late</add> till the reign of William the third was it forced upon<lb/>
them:  they have accordingly embraced every occasion for<lb/>
clogging it with technicalities, diminishing the efficiency of<lb/>
it and thus bringing it into disrepute.</p>
