Well then, from the dominion in question, whether
actually retained, or in vain endeavoured to be retained, what
advantages have we seen? none in any shape: none to either hemisphere.
On the contrary, suffering in sad plenty: suffering, in
every imaginable shape: except always to the ruling few, who,
whatsoever enjoyment from the unnatural union advantage they see for
themselves from so unnatural a union, know better than to acknowledge it. From Spanish
America, kept under the yoke, nothing but suffering on
either side. From Spanish America, free from the yoke, what
then is to be expected? Turn to the Royal Proclamation &#x2014; to that
very Proclamation by which those immense regions are called
upon to submitt to that same yoke; the <gap/><gap/> instrument that
gave <gap/> to this humble representative <gap/><gap/> authority
could not have been wished for on the ground of the
authority, behold what a constellation of advantages! advantages
<gap/><gap/><gap/><gap/>: a language, religion,
laws, customs" &#x2014; all the same. Here are bands of sympathy!
Consider will all these identities. Look, what surges of sympathy! Look, what
here are bonds of connection! not to speak of <gap/>
with the exception of religion in which operation of which extends to Catholic nations
