<p>Here then for the purpose of causing men to be put<lb/>

the law by which the being thus dealt with is made<lb/>
the consequence of the act of <hi rend="underline"><unclear>cutting</unclear></hi> accompanied with<lb/>
the bad intentions therein described – apprized of its existence,<lb/>
and to the effect in question – apprized of the meaning<lb/>
of the several words <add>by which it stands expressed</add> of which it is composed, the words<lb/>
<hi rend="underline">cut</hi> and <hi rend="underline">cutting</hi> among the rest.  But when for the<lb/>
purpose of sitting in judgment on an accusation charging<lb/>
a man with having committed <del>this</del> forbidden act of this<lb/>
description, a man of a class superior <add>superior to the bulk of the community</add> in point <add>respect</add> of<lb/>
condition of life and the portion of knowledge naturally<lb/>
attached to it, and on account of such <add>presumed</add> superiority<lb/>
selected, is placed in the situation of a Judge, then<lb/>
it is that because he is not <add>not being</add> a <del><gap/></del> professionally<lb/>
bred lawyer <add>Judge</add>, he is regarded by those who are professionally<lb/>
bred judges, as a man incapable of understanding<lb/>
and not fit to be trusted with pronouncing what it<lb/>
is that <hi rend="underline">cutting</hi> is <add>the words cut and cutting mean</add>.  That the individual accused has<lb/>
been guilty of offending against this law by which on pain<lb/>
of death the act of cutting is when accompanied with the<lb/>
evil intentions in question made a capital offence is what<lb/>
they are <add>indeed</add> permitted to decide:  but the act of <add>word</add> <hi rend="underline">cutting</hi> being<lb/>
one <add>of the number</add> of the words employed in the law, and the question<lb/>
concerning the import of it being accordingly a question<lb/>
of law, and professionally bred lawyers the only persons capable <add>qualified</add><lb/>
of understanding <add>to decide on</add> questions of law, and the Jurymen none of them<lb/>
professionally bred lawyers thence it is that their having pronounced<lb/>
