9 Sept. 1812
To Ld Sidmouth
And now my Lord being as what I am – being what
I am known to be – being what I have been so publickly
acknowledged to be – wherefore? for what honest, for
what avowable reason was I so totally utterly set aside?
I the only man who had who unless in so far as Howard
and his collaborators form an exception had never exhibited
on this subject any that to which the name of symptoms
of thinking could be attached set aside – and why?
for no other purpose than to make room for two Honourable
Gentlemen to whom it would be matter of serious affront injury
were any person cap to speak think of them as capable of
stooping so low as to think of my doing in the whole
business but besides the Salary the Architecture and the Patronage?
Yes my Lord – among the other commissions with
which I had troubled such of my Parliamentary friends
whose time would admit of their holding communication
with me was thus of giving up the earliest plan and
everything in the shape of personal advantage that it
was possible by any possibility could be detached from me.
They made no such offer – Why? because by no civil
temperament could the purpose and the only purpose that
ever was in view be served. The purpose was the job,
the job by which Honourable Gentlemen too Honourable by
far to submitt to any part of the labour were to have
the salary, the Architecture and the Patronage.
Had any such offer been made, the Job would
all the powers that be concurring in it with equal certainty would have been
carried into effect with eyes and for the annoyance given
by the offer, I should be ruined – ruin would be my lot
as far as it would be in the power of Honourable Gentlemen
to inflict it on me.
