Since the arrival of that letter, Time has not admitted of my receiving any information of concerning the state of affairs in Guatemala, otherwise than at second hand. According to what I have heard in this way, at the departure of the last advices than some disagreements and correspondent parting division had taken place there, between and two parties had in which the lead been formed in which a leading part was taken by yourself, Sir, on one side and by Mr Del Valle on the other. In this state of things there is nothing by which any the least dist can influence upon any body:[+] [+] nothing that any body is likely to be when that any body needs scripture to avoid. In a republic once operating it is naturally in a greater or less degree unavoidable: and so as it proceeds not to violence even beneficent. At Stranger as I am, and at any distance from the scene of action nothing could on my part be more than the idea of supposing myself competent to form any judgment respecting comparative merits, as between the one and the other. With undiscriminating ardor and sincerity my good wishes and consequent endearances embrace both, be the nature of the case such ardor can not altogether clear of anxiety, lest whatever disagreement, if any, that actually has place, the service of the country should, in one shape or other at so critical a time receive in one or any other critical a period receive detriment: and, in particular, by preventing you from lessing the cordiality and good effect of your endeavours on both sides for the forwarding the preeminently important work, in which I have thus been involved in my humble sphere I have thus been called upon to participate. in so far.

As one example, to shew how compatible exception is on some points is with was the most decided difference and strenuous opposition on others, I will hazard a few words, for the proper in the endeavour of giving to convey to you some conception of the situation in which I myself, who have no power whatever official power whatever In my stand, with relation to those, by whom the whole of it is possessed and exercised.
