Among the arguments employed in support of alledged Revealed
Religion, one not unfrequently employed has been the
alledged insufficiency of Natural Religion: So long therefore
as in his view of the matter the attack is confined to Natural
Religion, so far as from being the work of an adversary the work may
in his view be the work of an ally. True it is that As his adversary he may every
now and then perceive or suspect that the argument be observed,
are of a nature not to stop short at Natural Religion
but to apply go on advance further and through the sides of Natural
Religion go on to wound the alledged Revealed. But by this line he will
have made more or less advance in the work: and for want
of being sufficiently aware of what were about to follow suffered
his attention to apply attach itself to the subject, to engage
itself in the of argument in enter upon the of the enquiries.
This for the work may be read giving office to religionists
of any description whatsoever.

Not that the arguments sho which are in the immediate
operation force of which applies is applied in the immediate way be Natural
Religion and Natural Religion only alone would not upon
experiment be found to apply with more or less force to alledged Revealed Religion
likewise: to alledged Revealed Religion in all its forms
of such unimmediate application had not failed of having place, the design
and endeavour of his first part would as to so much be frustrated.
All that is here endeavoured at all that in this case is
possible is to avoid as far as possible all sudden shocks,
