Soon after the formation of the Committee Lord Byron
offered his services for the advancement of the Greek cause views of the Committee views in Greece. He
expressed a disposition to proceed to Greece thither & to dedicate
his time, his talents & his fortune to a cause which
he had in fact greatly assisted by the enthusiasm of his
genius, and "wedded to" his own "immortal verse." How well
he fulfilled his promise – how generously & nobly & wisely
he bore himself in the difficult circumstances in which
he was placed, – is now notorious to the events, – & while
the Committee mourn the loss of this most illustrious determined man
while engaged as their representative in the country which his genius had made twice – illustrious
they feel consideration & pride on the reflection that his name
& his memory will be enshrined & interblended throughout all time with the
words of regenerated Greece.

In May a public meeting was held at which Lord Milton
took the chair & various resolutions were passed in favor of
the Greek cause. All editors of newspapers in Great Britain
& Ireland were addressed entreating their support, and Circulars
were forwarded to the Dignitaries of the Church, – heads of
colleges – Masters of public schools, – & a number of corporate
bodies bodies both in town & country. The whole
amount of subscriptions collected has been
£ of which, the particulars will be found
