Of the results which the Universalist considers as about
to be produced by him his labours in this field, the only one by which any
sensation of an unpleasant nature is produced in his
mind is the idea of the detriment to his fellow labourers
in general, and in particular that portion of it, by which
such of them whose affect public affections either harmonize
altogether, or come nearest to his own. In relation to those
matters he has however the consolation to reflect – that no
such burthen to his competitors can take place without
being accompanied with a benefit of incomparably greater
magnitude and extent to his customers: and that in addition to this benefit, of which this comparatively small
burthen will be the accompaniment, a will be
added one of indefinite magnitude, which will come in
pure, by being in that portion being composed of that portion of the product
which will have been produced of the profit upon the sale
to those customers who would not have been such to any
of his competitors had his made out foot never been set
upon the contested field.
