Switzerland

Interesting as is the success landscape by which Switzerland is
approached on every side, one can hardly take a step within
the boundaries of this interesting little republic & not
feel that one is treading on holy ground. Liberty is
no longer an interdicted word – every thing one sees
& hears seems to breathe a new spirit. It is a green
spot in the midst of desolation. It is a rivulet for
one who is wearied & thirsty. This time I entered
Switzerland by the Jura meadows compartments – a succession
of sublime scenery – magnificent roads wheeling round
abrupt & overhanging mountains – amidst an eternal
melody of rapid streams – broken sometimes & made
more beautiful striking by the blasting of the rocks whose
thunder is hurled from precipice to precipice – till it dies
away in the deep vallies beneath. Was ever the
human so calm & so lovely? Did the "monarch of
mountains" ever look so proudly on his domain of
beneath towering hills? He sat like an intellectual
giant,– clad in the proud robes of dignity &
might!
