While thus the press pen & thus the pen press
Untired & restless are employed;
No one opinion you confess express
Can be be or scattered penned, or enjoyed

The fool for must be forsooth a fool
In spite of all his noisy rout
And laziness that wears a cowl
Be whipped laziness without.

The gifts which kind devotion brings
To grace the church – or pay for masses –
Are now entitled – useless things And they who bring them – Human apes.

Within a convents walls a monk
Hath be received the knave written on his door:
And many a maid be called a punk
Who was a cold, chaste hun before.

To yonder friars who in the street
Bows down his head & asks a vial:
There'll be a voice which hails him 'Cheat!'
And after sentence – comes denial.
