To <Add>a</add> person unconversant with the<lb/>Latin language it does not convey an idea so <gap/>,Lb/>as to a person <del><gap/></del> conversant with that language. The idea<lb/>meant to be conveyed by it is that which stands expressed by the<lb/>words appertaining to a thing: and this is the idea which accordingly<lb/>it does convey to the mind of a person conversant in that<lb/>language: <foreign><hi rend="underline">res</hi></foreign> being in Latin the word that corresponds to thing in<lb/>>English. <sic><hi rend="underline">Thingish</hi></sic> if the word were in use is endurable to<lb/>one English one in the word which <add>instead of the word real</add> would have been employed.</p> <p>But <sic><hi rend="underline">thingish</hi></sic> would not be endurable to an English ear,<lb/>any more than <sic><hi rend="underline">choisical</hi></sic> <del><gap/></del> to a French ear <sic>choisical</sic>.<lb/>Thence it is that as and for the requisite conjugate of thing<lb/>and chose <del><gap/></del> French as well as English are reduced to borrow <add>import</add><lb/>from the Latin the word <hi rend="underline">real</hi>.</p> <p>Then as to ambiguity.
