Relation – Logic of & Will combined

Hitherto, by logic under the name logic has
under the been understood – under the name of logic has
been comprehended in discourse nothing but what is hereinabove
designated by the name of logic of the understanding. It may
With no inconsiderable advantage benefit – nay even with perhaps still greater
advantage benefit it may be considered as applied to the will:
as applied occupied in giving direction to do apt expression and thereby
and so far direction to and intended effect to the matter
of law as above.

On the occasion of the endeavour to show how
and in what way apt expression and thereby intended effect may
be given to the matter of the law subject matter as it is of the
logic of the will, use in the way of analogy by appropriate reference may be made
of the instruction which has been given under the head of
the only branch of logic as yet known under that name: that
is to say the logic of the understanding. Of this use, exemplification
will be afforded presently, be afforded.

When of the logic of the will application is made
to any one of its purposes, the person by whom application is
thus made of it is either possessed or not not possessed with powers
of government applicable to that purpose: if of those same powers
he is possessed, the expression given to his will is termed
law in the aggregate law: and the expression given to it on any particular occasion,
a law. If so it be that by by this same person on the occasion
in question on hand and applicable to the purpose in question hand such no such persons
are not possessed, it has not as yet any generally received
name: it may be termed deontology.

Deontology is a word composed of two Greek
words: one denoting that which is proper or say fitting to be done:
the other doctrine: it is the doctrine which teaches what it is that
accordingly in the operation of this teaches is the sorts of occasions in question proper to be done.
