"-stitute for copper money till copper is as valu
-able as gold. I Counter-Observation"
This is his way of asserting, or rather of
than asserting - in a stile
of greater confidence than can be impressed
by simpler assertors - that no paper
money has ever been employed as a sub-

how stands fact? Is possibility sufficiently proved by fact?
Did he never hear of such a personman as Adam
Smith? Did he never hear of Yorkshire
paper finances? not to speak of the paper shillingssilver dollar and so many other paper monies
spoken of by that Adam Smith? Did he
never hear of such a place as of America with
its colonies and thus currencies? Did he
never hear of such a place as France with
its of all values from hundreds or thousands of
livres down to + the fraction of a farthing?
Did he never hear of such a place as Scot-
