falshood when it takes this course to propagate
itself may be stiled ordinary falshood. The other
is, not to give him you to understand any thing about
your his own belief, but to seek to influence his your's by
a more direct though less common and less obvious
contrivance. This contrivance is no other than
to produce some alteration in the appearances of
things objects themselves: to wit of such objects that is in
the appearances which objects may exhibit to
your own senses upon those objects being taken
into your own immediate consideration: to wit
such objections objects the appearances of which
are of a nature to shew as if appear if only connected
connected with in point of causality with the facts
in question concerning which it is his endeavour
to influence your belief insomuch that the former
are calculated to serve as proofs or evidences respecting
the latter. This latter method of propagating
falshood; though frequently practised and as frequently
taken into contemplation seems never
yet to have rece4ived any determined a name. It may be termed
fucation, from fucus paint or varnish: the business
of this species of falshood being as the phrase
