Grecian & Roman temples, though while, on the
occasion of those operations, by which the individual
is preserved, a the the appearance
of the two sexes in the same company was
regarded as an offence, if not against modesty,
against decency. These opinions are
brought to view, for no other cause than that it
may be seen that they have not been overlooked:
but while, in respect of the intercourse between
the sexes sex and sex publick opinion continues in the
same state in which it is at present, throughout all over
the civilized world. Any act that
commonly regarded as an offence against
modesty will be liable to be productive of
real pain of mind at any rate to a person of the female
sex. In this case too, the offence will be
confined to the class of private offences, or
extend itself to the class of publick ones according
