Of Perjury

Perjury at large, what Perjury at large is where a man being called
utters a wilful falshood upon oath.

Criminal Perjury, what Criminal Perjury is where a man being
called upon by lawful authority (A) to declare upon oath (B) the his
oath belief (C) respecting such or such a any matter, utters declares (D) a wilful
falshood touching the matter in question.

Exposition

What the authority may be [(A) Authority] For instance by authority of a Judge, to
be examined as a witness or a party in any cause:
or by any other public officer in the execution of his office:
such authority being conferred on him either by written
or unwritten law.

An oath in law, what [(B) Oath] An oath (in the legal sense of the word) is a set form of words whereby it
which a person previous to his being examined is required
to pronounce, and which if he pronounces, he
thereby declares gives to understand that in case of his declaring in the
course of his examination any wilful wilful falshood
he believes and expects that that God will punish him, and that
in that case he consents as far as in him lies to be so punished. (a)

(a) To this form of words certain ceremonies are frequently
annexed: but these are different in different countries.
