Facility of the French This is one of the cases in which

so much as a proof of generosity as of good trading.
It is exerted not in favour of one person any one man in
particular, but in favour of any man whosoever
he may be. So far from being manifested It is exerted not out of friendship, but
it is most likely to be exerted by persons who are
least capable of a strong sentiments of friendship
In short it is exerted not so much at all out of regard
to the gallant, but only as a species of justice
to the wife. Sensible how little he can bear to confine
his amours to a single object, he is ashamed
to exact of his wife a constancy which would form
so unreasonable a contrast with his own levity.
