Diss. Of Falshoods in general

Though Falshood imports nothing more than at an attempt,, no yet abatement this does not make any abatement necessary in the corresponding part of the punishment . It is to be observed that the falshood is in
itself but an attempt: which may or may not be
attended with success. This however need make no
difference in the punishment. If the attempt be unsuccessful,
the abatement if any may be made in
some other part of the punishment: in that part
to wit the quantity of which is calculated to keep pace with made to follow the quantity of
the primary mischief. For the secondary mischief
(as is shewn elsewhere is hav is very little diminished
by failure of success.
Specimens of characteristic punishment proposed for the several modes of falshood as combined with the several offences I shall now proceed to exhibit specimens
of characteristic punishments adapted to the different
offences with which falshood may be combined, and
the different shapes in which it may display itself.
