4 C
Of Defraudment by begging
Quest. III
1 Why the punishment of rendering the knave's account
is admitted of in this case
Reasons
1. This act is pretty strongly indicative of a habit.
A punishment of this sort will therefore every now and then be necessary in order to enable obviate the whole inconvenience of the offender's remaining in possession of the profit of the offence. See Introd. Ch. [Proportion &c] Rule 1. Explan. 3.
Impostors of this kind are indeed most commonly in general at the lowest
state ebb of poverty. Now and then however an instance
will happens in which of a man who is known found to have amassed a considerable
sum by such means. When this is the
case it is not fit that the impostor should revel
in the spoils of the compassionate and the distressed.
To see him triumph in the success of his iniquity
is an unpleasing spectacle to both those classes
of persons: to see the fruits of it taken from him
is a sort of compensation satisfaction made to
them.
