are pleased with a punishment contrived made upon
this plan, if they find no for objecting
to it on the score of severity they find nothing to object to it. They say
of it that It is consonant they say, to right reason, to
natural justice, to equity and so forth: that is
in short they like the thoughts of it without being able to
tell why.

Why provocation provocation in general is
not admitted in this case as a ground of
extenuation?

Reasons

1. Because persons in an ordinary degree
well-disposed will never stand in need of such
an extenuation. However irritated they will never
think of gratifying their resentment by such
cruel outrages. If there be any man who would,
it is a sign that he stands in needs to have of a severe
and striking punishment in prospect in order to induce him
to correct his disposition.
