Of the [purposes] of Procedure
Ends
at those several periods or stages of its actual or
possible existence: it may be considered as being future, or contingent as
being present, or as being past. Now it is evident, that When the whole of
the mischief which is in question is as yet
contingent, it may enter into the plan of proce-
-dure to prevent the whole of it: when it is as
yet present, situated between the pr past and the future, it is only a part that can be prevented: viz:
so much of the mischief of the individual act in
question as is as yet but future: when it is past
it is only with regard to the mischief of future
acts of the like kind with that in question that
procedure can display any preventive efficacy.
