39. The Synonysms to be settled among correspondent officers in Corporations in respect to whom the Nomenclature
of is at present frequently — confounded — This "Bailiff" in one place will mean
the name as "Mayor" in another viz. the head officer — in another it well mean
an infer officer subordinate to the a Mayor, of which there shall be one in
the same Corporation — and shall will sometimes single sometimes double — Mayor however may always stand for the head officer, & therefore for the Bailiff
in such Corporations where he is & the Head-Officer — and it is I believe, only
with the head officer whatever he be called, that General statutes have usually
any concern.
