Judges Number

It is no uncommon effect of terror to
drive men into the mouth of danger. A great
object of terror and evident object of apprehension to the Committee seems to be has been
the danger of leagues that might be formed among Judges in
opposition to the legislature. Under the impression
they cram fill these Courts upon the old plan
full of Judges, and of whom the number is encreased
in proportion as they rise in dignity
and power. I will not pretend for my own
part to partake share in the smallest degree of
any such apprehension: I see nothing In the
edifice of the Committee, with amidst all the faults
of construction I impute to it I see not the
least corner capable in my apprehension, to my imagination of
harbouring the ghost of a departed murdered Parliament.
But to a mind still agitated with those terrors
the plan principle of unity in judication should afford
a preservative not to be despised. My
Judges stan stand each of them alone. None
of them has any other to confederate with.
