13.
A Pleasure. what.
And now we are enabled to determine ascertain what
it is we mean when we speak of a
pleasure: what it is that constitutes the is the constituent of
identity of in pleasures: wh how much it is
of the sum total of our sensations during throughout
life that goes to the constituting of an individual
pleasure: tis the identity of the
cause. *13
14.
Instance Eating
Food is the instrument, eating is the cause of a certain pleasure.
I eat, and in so doing I feel a pleasure:
how much of the sum total of my sensations
goes to the making of that pleasure? as
much as is spent during passes while I am is occupied by my the act of eating [ next go to No 18.]
15.
Magnitude in as ple person
With respect The Product of the intensity and duration
of a pleasure, may be termed its magnitude.
16.
Lot of Happiness
What in a single person makes a pleasure,
---page break---
in a state may be said to
make a lot of Happiness.
17.
The Magni In a state The great product of the intensity and duration
of a lot of happiness
Magnitude in a State. The Magnitude of a lot of happiness in a
state is the product of the it's intensity and
duration of it in each person, multiplied by
the number of persons who perceive it.
18.
Value of a cause of Pleasure present
The Value of an instrument or a cause of pleasure, is
as the value magnitude value of the pleasure of which
is it's effect, if it's produce effect be pleasure and
nothing else.
19.
Value of a Pleasure present.
The value of a present pleasure can be no other consider'd as present
than it's magnitude. and without regard to any other sensation that
may stand connected with it+ + by unity [identity] of cause by having the same
cause, can be no other than it's magnitude.
---page break---
Tis [the nature of] the cause that connects one
portion of time pr spent in pain or pleasure
with another portion of time spent in pain
or pleasure: of the time of one a man, with
the time that of the same man: of the time
of one man with that of another man.
*13 Tis the cause that is the Bond of Connection between A The cause is an instrument in action: the action of an instrument the cause of a pleasure is the instrument of it in action.
20.
Proximity. But an a Pleasure not present, is not of equal value
NOE
(2 Species. Comparative Value of.
A pleasure of Expectation founded on a pleasure
of possession is not of equal value magnitude
with the latter pleasure: because for the latter
is but a pleasure of poss expectation: so that
a pleasure derived from it is but an expectation
of an expectation. It is one remove
further from the source. v.f. III. A pleasure &c.
---page break---
It is duration that gi
The advantage in value that pleasures of
expectation have over pleasures of fruition enjoyment are
three+ +rest in two points. Duration, variety and if I may be allowd the
expression, penetrability: the power of diffusing
themselves betwixt the intervals and even into
the very locus of each any other, and any other
pleasure; so as to fill up all those spaces in of
life existence which would otherwise be vacant.
Pleasures of impression can not be had without the
presence of the external objects or instruments
that are fitted to produce them: but these being
pleasures of idea are subject to the imagination,
and present themselves at it's call obey the call of the imagination
I am sitting with my over a bottle with my
friend: I drink sip the liquor, & taste enjoy a
pleasure of fruition of impression at the same time I
enjoy a pleasure of expectation in the idea of his friendship:
that is to speak more at large, from the indistinct
view of the unliquidated pleasures I may hope
to compass through his friendship assistance through his means he may be a means of my enjoying goodwill.
