Names of the first may be printed in Italics with the name of the
other party subjoined in like manner — the number of the case
in Roman Numerals. [That is if the number of cases is computed
from the beginning of the book in which they are all
contained, but if from the first Book published upon this —
plan then it were better the common cyphers were allotted
to the number of the case — because the number of pages in any
one book will never be a thousand : But that of the cases running
on indefinitely will come at last to be expressed by a notation
which in the Roman Form would be unfamiliar in the
highest numbers to the People & inconvenient by it's length]—
and of the Page in cyphers with the mark Plff or Deft./ /as
the case is subjoined. Connected by the common abbreviatory marks
signifying, "against", or at the Suit of" according as the —
party first named is Plff or Deft. Those of the second in
ordinary types then the name of the cause, & the page where
mentioned.

Those of the third with the name of the cause and page.
2d Persons concerned in litiscontestation - whether Judges,
Councils, Attorneys, Subordinate Officers of the Court, of Jurymen
or Witnesses with abbreviations denoting their respective
capacities the name of the case and page where mentioned.

At the title of each volume may be mentioned the Judges and
Officers of the Court during the Period which it includes.
At the title of each case the names of the several Council &
Attornies of each side and under this latter denomination
In Chancery the Clerk in Court as well as Sollicitor in the King's
Bench the Clerk in Court as well as Attorney — In the Exchequer
the Attorney at large as well as the Attorney belonging
to the Court, where those characters happen respectively to be
separated. In like manner in a Country Cause the Agent in
Town as well as the immediate original Attorney in the country.

A regular preservation of these memorials has more cases —
in abundance than can be particularly pointed out — How
many scatter'd intelligencies do we glean with avidity from
the writings of our incurious Ancestors, who little thought of the
search we make after them or the uses to which we put them! [try to gather instances.].

2d Of Places — the mode of reference as before.
In general one use of this will be an authentic History gradually
forming of all the property of the Kingdom, in which by
the help of such an Index every man as he had occasion —
might read what concerned that past with which he had to
do. In a view merely literary it would be of great use to Typographical Historians in their compilation.

In particular in the instance of Boroughs in respect of their
Constitution, and of Parishes in respect of their Tythes, every
private man might see at once whether any thing had ever
been transacted relative to that Borough or Parish wherewith
he had to do, and every public person what advancement had —
been made towards the universal settlement of the whole
number in the [Kingdom.]

3d To the Points decided.Index to the points — decided In the first Place every case ought to be noticed under the
title of that sort of action which gave birth to it. As Action
of Debt. Or in Equity, Injunction — Specific Performance.

2d Also under that of the place where it is founded on a
Statute which is local — as London.

2d Also under that of the thing which is the Subject of the
Action — as Bond.In Contracts &stipulations, the instrument of one evidencing the contract or stipulation.

3. The person who is the object where he has any thing to
characterize and distinguish him from the mass of Suiters in general
_ _ as Estors Admor Infant Husband & Wife. 4thly If it be a matter of practice that occasioned the question,
it should be inserted also under the Title of that Stage of the
cause concerning which it was moved. As Declaration Verdict.
