of lenity which if ascribable to either part<lb/>

lenity being in his conception or at least<lb/>
in his expression a quality indisputably<lb/>
inherent in these sanguinary laws viz<lb/>

after a momentary nod during which<lb/>
he was dreaming that "<hi rend='underline'>lenity</hi>" not "cruelty"<lb/>
was the Charge he had to vindicate <add>them</add></p>
