INTROD. Distribution of the Work. [BR][]

---page break---

having any such Opinion five Things are necessary;
1st. That he know there is such a
Law [upon the Subject;] which belongs to Notoriety:
2dly. That he understand it, when he has got it,
which belongs to perspicuity: 3dly That he remember
what he has understood i.e. that he [who] remember it [& understand it] at the time where the natural motive for doing the action which the Law commands, forbids, permitts or regulates comes upon him, which besides
the former Circumstances depends also upon it's
Brevity: i.e. the smallness of its Volume 4thly. That the Law be usually executed
upon those who transgress, which belongs to
Certainty: 5thly, That he know that it is so,
or at least that he know not to the contrary,
which belongs again to Notoriety.

Of these four Circumstances, viz: Notoriety,
Certainty of Execution, Perspicuity &
Brevity, the two former are extrinsic, depending
upon something that is without the Law: consequently
there remain the two intrinsic Circumstances
of Perspicuity & Brevity. Brevity Volume This Brevity is not absolute but relative viz. to the if number & amplitude of the ideas to be convey'd

Thus it is, that [all] what that] any] one can
have to say about [any a Law Laws whatsoever is referable [may
be referred to one or other of these six Heads 1st.
Offences 2d. Punishments. 3 Certainty 4 Notoriety 5 5. Perspicuity. 6. Voluminousness — This accordingly is the distribution which I shall follow pursue
