5. Impregnation. By the expulsion of the air
this process may be facilitated in every instance:
whatever be the <add>object in </add>design of the impregnation, the nature of the im substancefluid impregnating
or the solid to be impregnated, or of the fluid
with which it is to be impregnated.- whither it be
for colouring softening or preserving

This facility may be given for example to the process of dying
filamentousfibrous or other fibrous, or porous substances, woven or unwoven, where,
according to the present methods the presence of
the air operates as an impediment to the equal
application of the mordant or the dye to all the
subst surfaces or through within all the pores: as
in the dying of strains of silk or other thread and
beaver or other felt hats: so likewise to the staining of marble, wood, straw
and bone and marble. &. So for example

- So also to the pro impregnation of leather shirts
with oil for the purpose of softening itthem in the
process of currying; or of straw with water to
fit the straw immediately for treating, and p all forms
the colour of it from being impaired by long
immersion

So also with to the impregnating of skins
with tannin or an infusion of tannin's bark or other
astringentsor preservation ingredients for the purpose of preserving themit from putrefaction.
So for example to the impregnating of
any substance with any other whither in a liquid state
or in a state of vapour with a view to the preserving substance
in question by the exclusion of the atmospherical air. So
