In giving you my stating to you the reasons for the form given
in various respects to the advertisement I submitted
to you I omitted I believe that such as relate
to that clause which forbids prohibits candidates from applying
otherwise than by letter.

Had Verbal applications had they been admitted would
have been liable to the following objections.

1. They would have taken up the time and
exercised the trouble of the agent, consequently
the expence of employing him.

2. If he had not made minutes memorandums of what passed the
conversations would have been liable to be inaccurately
and unsatisfactorily reported to me, and
then I should have had memorandums to take
at second hand from him. If he had taken time to take
such written memorandums still they would not have been
so satisfactory as if made statements given by the
candidates themselves, and then these would have
been the trouble & charge of making them.

3. As to all such conversations you I might
and any part of them I might have been kept
in the dark by the agent, through negligence.
and you might have been kept equally in the
dark by a person standing in my situation
by design. I might have reported to you as most
advantageous the proposals of any one whom I chose
to favour suppressing others that were more advantageous
.
