forced her to give up all hopes. She said she had burnt my
letters and required me to gi send her hers. Now as She had
forwarned me that such a demand might be made in consequence
of a moment of weakness on her part, and had begd me
never to give them up; I accordingly imagining her letter
to be written under the influence of her parents, refused
to give up her letters. She replied entreating me again to give
them up: but I refused the second time more peremptorily
than the first. I however afterwards understood that it
was of her own free will that She demanded my her letters and
that she was enraged against me for not delivering them up.
I forgot to tell you that in refusing to give up her letters to
the man whom She sent for them I promised to give them
into her own hands whenever she would permit me.
