ARE you Chairman of the Commissioners of Charitable Inquiry?- The Speaker
is their Chairman; I am one of the Commissioners.
In what year were the Commissioners appointed?- The first commission was
appointed in the year 1818; it first embraced on charities for education; the
following year it was enlarged, and made to extend to all the charities of whatever
description

Have you any statement of the expenditure?- I have brought a statement of the
general expenditure of the commission from its origin. This statement was pre-—
— pared in obedience to an order of the House of Commons for a return of the gene-—
— ral expenses of te commission. We have not had time to make out any more
particular return, but the accounts are here.

How many Reports have the commissioners made?- They have made nineteen.
What prospect is there f the labors of the commission being brought to a close?
-I am quite unable to answer that question, it depends so entirely on the state of
the charities in the counties which they visit.
What proportion of the charities have you examined into?- We have completed
the charities of the 13 counties, and there are, I think, 16 more counties that are in
progress.

Does the commission extend to Wales and Scotland?- To England and Wales,
not to Scotland.

Is it probable there will be as much business to go through in the remaining
counties as in those you have examined?- It is impossible to judge of that. We
find the number of charities in different counties very different; and even the number
does not enable us to form any correct estimate of what the amount of labour will
much less investigation than a much smaller number in another.

What is the total expense of the commission up to this time?-foreign language text. 138,850.
Is there nothing now due for salaries to the commissioners?- There will be a
half-year's payment of salary due of the 5th of April.

Do the commissioners receive their salary by votes?- No, it is provided by
the Act that the salaries shall be paid half-yearly.

What are the salaries?- There are ten examining commissioners at 1,000 l. a
year

How do they divide themselves?- Into five boards. Under the first commis-—
sion the number of action commissioners was eight, and three were requited to
make a board. There were then two travelling boards, and one in London, made
