Letter 3
|2 XVII Huks
Great severity at the outset upon the brow of the new
Hercules: appalling glances But down upon the culprit
Stable keeper: fire and flame in the superior region, tremblings
and qualings in the lower, But times change; and dispositions
with them: and through dispositions should not individualspersons
themselves change in time. I put the case
forward: I speak of the best that can happen. I suppose
- I hope no offence by the supposition - it is but a
supposition - that noble Lords are in earnestmean what they appear<add>would be thought</add>to mean - and that
the object is - andnot merely to make the place - much less to rivet the abuse but to remove it.
But times change, and dispositions with them: and through
dispositions should not, individuals themselves go off in time.
Time in these cases such situations especially in a great a great emotional
of distances: a great begetter of and mutal understanding promoter of explanations. A B
very few months not to say weeks - not to say day.
will be sufficient to bringput things into some channel:
and the odds are many - many indeed to air in favour
of the old one. Between superintendent and subordinate
there must be an understanding. and understanding of some
sort or other - or busines can not go on.
