Adversaries to grt.
happiness prine.
1. property trumpeting
principle
2. The original contract.
These two, together with the original contract all emanatg from
the same illustrious and justly-respected source were all of them
so many adversaries of the greatt. happss. prine.:
1. The property trumpeting prine., as a leading opinion and
axiom into an erroneous & malefict. course of whh. more
particularly presently, by pointg. to a wrong object or end in view,
in the character of a polar star by whh. the course of
humane conduct ought to be regulated directed.
2. The original contract by teachg. men to look for the
proper end of government not in the conduciveness of
its forms & arrangemts. to the greatt. happs. of the
community but to the observance of a fiction whh. even if it
had been a reality wd. have wanted much of being an
adequate substitute to the greatt. happs. prince. For
true it is indeed that in most cases observance of
contracts is conducive to the maximum happiness.
But in cases to a vast extent so far from of being conducive
to that purpose it wd. be destructive of it. Take
for example the whole field of crime: suppose a
contract having for its object the perpetratn. of any one of
crimes contained in that same field. Such accordingly
is the species of contract actually entered into in case
of every individl. crime in the contrivance of whh. there
concert as well as cooperatn. on the part of individls.
more than one; individuals who in consideratn.
of such concert are with reference to one another in
familiar as well as legal language styled accomplices.
