Ch. Aneudiagram Expressn.
§. 2. Mode of applying
10
21 9
As capable of expressible
by verbal description of situation, as by
characters are the mutual
relations of the parts of diagrams
21 9. The distinguishable parts of Geometrical figures, or
say diagrams, are as capable of being expressed by their relation to
one another in respect of situation, as by arbitrary signs,
such as letters of the alphabet.
22 10
Advantage of verbal
description: general and
permanent the idea produced
as being permanently associated
by habit with
these signs: thence only
applicable to each individual
idea included in the general ones
22 10. In so far as the relation is expressed in words the
idea attached to it cannot but be a general one, and will
remain in the mind easily applicable to each individual
case — the idea attached to the sign being firmly attached
to it by undiscontinued habit.
23 11
Disadvantage of non-verbal
or say symbolic —
the idea is but particular,
individual, fugitive, in
most minds the labour
uninstructive
23 11. When the relation is no otherwise expressed by
the arbitrary sign — the description being non-verbal or say symbolic the letter — which presents not
the idea in question but on that individual occasion —
in company with that individual diagram, the
idea in the majority of minds is no better than
particular, and no general and leading no lasting instruction is
conveyed by it.
24 12.
Clear and comprehensive
conception of the
contents of the field in this
mode none: facility for
rapid observation of their
mutual relations,
none.
24 12. No clear and comprehensive conception can thus
be formed of the contents of the field of posology: no
facility for the rapid observation of their mutual
relations and dependencies.
25. 13
Directions for taking conveying to,
into, and keeping in the
mind the image by
verbal description the idea
or say image of the diagram:
relative position requisite.
25. 13. Mental image of the diagram. To facilitate the
description of the parts of a diagram by their relation to
each other it may be of use that the diagram should
be considered as occupying in every case the same
position with reference to the supposed reader:
in which case the idea of book, placed before him
as is usual when a man reads in a sitting posture
with an open book on a table in front of him, is
included in the idea of the diagram. This done,
the words right & left, top and bottom, present
in every instance the same idea, and may
accordingly be employed of right lines, the base
will be that of which the position is parallel
to the supposed reader, as he sits.
