5. Because of the chance there is that the offender
may have contributed purposely to the calamity

serves as a sort of moral lesson. By supposing
the people capable of such dark acts of heroism, as to
about expose themselves to the rigours of the law from
principles of benevolence, it shows that the Legislator
has a good opinion of them: it teaches them to
have a good opinion of themselves. It indirectly
bestows on them the first of praises the praise of benevolence:
and by so doing invites them to deserve it.
