If by conjecture I have been able to lay hold of the
conception by which trap or forc pretended unanimity has
been recommended to acceptance it is this — business
will be dispatched so much the sooner, to them banished and of the freedom liberty of
suffrage thus destroyed.
The result is what as already observed, does not
present itself to one my view as the probable one nor probable. my but suppose it
probable, and observe the nature and quantum of the expected benefit, whatever the
for the sake of which, and as the form of for which more
are content to parry by the establishment of mendacity
perjury, injustice, and insupportable torture. Dispatch of business
accelerated? in Ju what is done by a fine for accepting
some in in 2 or hours sometimes instead of or three as
many: and why this anxiety to expedite the proceeding
of a Jury? — because a Jury, Juries acting under
the eye of Judges, and whatever delay has taken
the in the proceedings of Juries bring a delay which
forces itself upon the notice of Judges, a delay which
every body knows if their knowing a word of which it
would be in vain for them to pretend ignorance — a
deley thus prudential, inconvenient though it be but a delay of a
few hours is may become matter of reproach to them and as
such matter of inconvenience. But let the delay be
so encouraged, as then the causes of it not being manifest
the mischief and the reproaches if it can not find them to fix upon — then
in doing may be of last months or years and pra shall
in theirs their eyes be a matter indifference. a trust not be vastly by thought.
