Here then comes the inquiry into the comparative demand
which, in the case of this situation, has place for
appropriate aptitude in these several branches:
and as to comparison, the subject object of comparison reference
being, in the different branches different, the differ-
-ence will require to be kept in mind.

1st As to appropriate knowledge: here comes the
difference the immense difference, between the
quantity of this element, which is will be in demand under
the system of all comprehensive codification, and
that which has place under a chaos composed of
statute Law and Judge made Law together in every
country which is still suffering under that plague
In a Country where that chaos reigns, the quantity
of that acquirement which goes by the name of
knowledge never can be too great never can be
sufficiently great. Hence it is, that the acqui-
sition of a quantity which shall fall as little
short as may be of being a sufficient quantity,
tho math enormous no price is not regarded as being too great. The men
by whom, in the situation of advocate, the greatest
display of it has been made are looked out for,
and their pay in that situation having been
propositioned to the rarity of the accomplishment,
the prices which, for buying a man from the
service of injustice to what is declared to be the
service of Justice, are such, that, to require a
man for the labour of laying in a supposed
competent stock of fraud, sophistry & absurdity in
this shape, a price must be given, superior, perhaps,
to the earnings of artists in the most difficult and
delightful arts.
